The elm genus comprises around 30 different species, of which only three – wych elm, field elm and European white elm – are native to Europe. The elm is a tree with a strong need for warmth, and its wood is among the heavy, hard timbers and can be worked well. Elms are among the longer-lived tree species, though pests – tree fungi in particular – mean they only rarely reach old age.
