European Walnut

This deciduous tree generally reaches a height of between 25 and 30 metres, while the broad crown of the walnut tree can span more than 15 metres in diameter. Its upward growth stops by the age of 80 at the latest, although walnut trees can live far longer – up to 150 years. The supply of European walnut (Juglans regia) is very limited; the diameters we need for table tops are especially rare. Walnut trees with a diameter of more than one metre are the holy grail of timber buying. All the more reason why it matters to us that trees are not felled prematurely – but rescued only at the end of their natural lifespan.

The walnut tree’s leaves are medium-sized, elliptical and dark green. The walnuts sit in a green husk that turns brown and bursts open as it ripens. Walnuts in particular are an important food: thanks to their high fat content they were, and remain, a good source of energy — and they are considered exceptionally healthy.
