Maple

The maple genus includes the three most common species: sycamore maple, field maple and Norway maple. Popular across Europe, this tree is excellently suited as furniture wood thanks to its good stability. In Europe, maples are native practically everywhere except the northern parts of Scandinavia. In North America, the sugar maple is used to produce maple syrup: a small notch is cut into the tree's bark and the escaping sap is collected with tubes.

The characteristic shape of the maple leaf and the winged maple seeds make the tree instantly recognisable, which is why maples are among the best-known trees of all. The two-winged seeds are familiar even to children as “nose pinchers” or “helicopters”.

Sycamore maple is one of the lightest native wood species. A frequent growth pattern with wavy grain is characteristic of all maples, producing the special visual effect known as fiddleback figure. Maple wood is difficult to split but easy to work. Sycamore maple in particular is well suited to milling, turning, drilling and carving. Its wood takes stains well and responds to all other surface treatments.
